Life is full of unexpected
hitches; you're running to a meeting and you get a snag in your stockings, you
are dancing at a party & you snap a heel, or you're at a wedding when you
notice the hem of your dress has fallen. It seems like wardrobe malfunctions
always occur at the most inconvenient times . just ask Janet
Jackson!
Here are 10 tips for
solving your common fashion emergencies:
1.
Makeup Stains Baby or make-up wipes are ideal for
removing or reducing makeup stains on clothing. They also come in handy for
removing lint from clothing and dirt from shoes. Do not try to remove any
stains from silk - go to a dry cleaner.
2.
Fallen Hems For a make-do hem in a hurry, use
Hollywood tape or Res Q tape. This is double-sided tape especially designed as
a temporary fix for clothing.
3.
Slipping Bra Straps There is nothing more annoying
than forever having to pull your bra straps back up onto your shoulders. There
are three fixes for this. Use the same double-sided tape as above to
stick the strap to your shoulder.
Cut and re-sew the back straps
further in toward the centre of your back.
Purchase bra clasps - these
are attached at the back and pull the two back straps together, however you
will need a second person to do this for you.
4.
Runs in your Tights A small run in tights / panty hose
can soon develop into a full fledged tear. Use clear nail polish over the run
to stop it spreading.
5.
Static Cling This often happens with skirts. For a fix
on the run, rub hand cream into your thighs (through panty hose if necessary).
The best way of preventing static cling is to spray anti static spay to the
inside of your skirt. You can buy this at supermarkets in the hosiery section
and in the lingerie section of department stores.
6.
Stuck Zipper First run a lead pencil along the teeth,
if this does not work rub a bar of soap or a wax candle onto the problem area.
With a little manipulation, the zipper should come unstuck.
7.
Loose Buttons/Fraying Button Threads A loose button
can quickly turn into a missing button. Dab the top of the button with a little
clear nail polish to prevent it from completely falling off. Re-sew it back on
firmly ASAP.
8.
Sweater Snags Never cut a snag off as this will cause
the garment to unravel, instead use a snag needle - simply push the ball point
needle into the garment at the base of the snag and when the roughened end of
the needle is at the surface of the garment, twist it and it will catch the
snag - pull the needle through the garment and the snag will be pulled through
as well. Instantly the sweater looks like new!
9.
Broken Drawstrings Purchase a new draw string from a
haberdashery store. Tie on to the end of the string a large safety pin and
thread it through the garment.
10.
Pilled Sweaters These can be removed either with a
lint sand paper (rub across sweater to remove pills) or a pill razor; an
apparatus much like a man's shaver that is used to shave the pills off a
sweater. Don't just stand there pulling lint off yourself! Rub a piece of
Velcro along the pilled fabric to remove those unattractive balls. Sticky tape
works well for this too.
